Finding Natural Relief From Asthma

Many people that suffer from asthma turn immediately to inhalers and drugs for relief. However, there are a number of natural methods that may help you find asthma relief instead of or in addition to traditional inhalers.

1. Carpet Cleaning

When asthma is triggered by dust mites, having a dirty carpet may make matters worse. Thoroughly cleaning carpets regularly or even replacing carpet with wooden flooring may help relieve the bulk of asthma symptoms. Even the action of vacuuming carpets twice a week may improve asthma symptoms.

2. Ginger

Ginger has been shown to reduce both inflammation and airway constriction. Ginger can be consumed raw, as a juice, or even as a tea. Consuming ginger raw or in a liquid form on a daily basis may help keep asthma symptoms in check. For those that do not like the taste of ginger, it may also be found in a supplement form.

3. Black Tea/ Coffee

Daily caffeine consumption may help reduce asthma symptoms because this chemical dilates the bronchi, allowing for better air passage. While most caffeine drinkers turn to coffee, black tea may also provide enough caffeine to have an effect. Drinking one cup of coffee or tea a day may provide asthma relief without in turn leading to caffeine addiction.

4. Honey

Honey is often used to treat colds and sore throats. Since it can sooth the throat and reduce coughing, it may serve as natural asthma relief. Mixing honey in with tea or consuming a tablespoon of honey straight may help reduce coughing and wheezing.

5. Figs

Figs are known for contributing to respiratory health and relieving breathing difficulties. Dried figs are readily available at most supermarkets. Simply soak the dried figs in water overnight and consume the soaked figs and fig water in the morning for relief.

6. Eucalyptus Oil

Eucalyptus oil contains decongestant properties that may prove effective for asthma relief. It can be used at night by placing a few drops on a towel and keeping the towel by your head as you sleep. Additionally, those suffering from asthma may find relief by adding a few drops of eucalyptus to a pot of boiling water and breathing in the steam.

7. Onions

This household staple is not only a common cooking ingredient, but also contains anti-inflammatory properties. Consuming onion can help decrease inflammation in the lungs and reduce contraction of the air passages. While consuming raw onion may have the strongest effect, cooked onion may also provide relief.

8. Lemons and Fruit

Lemons and other fruits that are high in vitamin C can not only boost the immune system, but may also reduce asthma symptoms. Drinking the juice of half of a lemon mixed in with water on a daily basis is a quick way of consuming vitamin C. Other fruits such as oranges and berries may also provide relief. However, consuming lemon juice from a bottle will do little to relieve symptoms.

9. Licorice Root

Licorice is another home remedy that is known for its anti-inflammatory properties. It may be used to soothe the lungs and reduce fits of coughing and wheezing. It may be found as a tea in supermarkets and health food stores.

10. Garlic

Garlic can be used to reduce congestion and reduce inflammation. The best way to use garlic to relieve asthma symptoms is to boil two or three cloves in a quarter cup of water or milk. Drinking this mixture daily may reduce asthma symptoms on a regular basis.
