5 Ways to Prevent Cancer
Experts and researchers still aren’t sure what exactly will completely prevent the onset of various types of cancers. However, most will agree that certain lifestyle changes can enhance prevention.
If you’re serious about the prevention of cancer, you’ll be surprised to find that simple changes in lifestyle can make all the difference. These are five tips for preventing cancer and developing a healthy lifestyle.
1. Steer clear of tobacco.
It’s no secret that smoking has been linked to cancer, but you might not know how many types. Smoking has been known to have a hand in the development of lung, throat, mouth, larynx, bladder, pancreatic, kidney, and cervical cancer. Furthermore, chewing tobacco can cause pancreatic and oral cancer. Staying away from tobacco and cigarettes is one of the best things you can do for your health. If you need help with quitting, your doctor can provide a wealth of information.
2. Stick to healthy eating.
For most people, eating healthy on a consistent basis is as simple as nailing Jello to a wall. It can be incredibly difficult to make healthy dietary choices 100% of the time, but doing your best can go a long way. If you are overweight, transition to a diet that is rich in vegetables and fruits. This is a great diet even for those who are already at a healthy weight. Go light on the alcohol and processed meats, and if you can, trying implementing a Mediterranean diet.
3. Stay physically active.
Exercise has been linked to a decrease in risk of colon, kidney, prostate, and breast cancer. In fact, there are a number of health benefits to be reaped from physical activity. As a rule of thumb, aim for 2.5 hours of aerobic exercise each week. You can also substitute this for an hour and 15 minutes of vigorous physical activity each week. The more exercise you can fit into your schedule, the better.
4. Wear sun protection.
You don’t have to stay inside in order to avoid the harmful rays of the sun. You just need to be a bit more informed about how to protect yourself while outside. Try to stay out of the sun between the hours of 10AM and 4PM, and keep a sunglasses and a brimmed hat nearby. Always lather yourself in sunscreen if you know you’ll be outside for more than a few moments during the day. Never visit tanning salons, as the bulbs in the beds are just as harmful as the sun’s rays.
5. Practice smart behaviors.
Living life in a reckless manner is notorious for provoking the onset of cancer. You can eliminate your chances of the development of various types of cancer by practicing safe sex, not sharing needles in relation to tattooing and drug usage, and more.
