Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that is at times mistaken for other conditions. It manifests itself through muscle pain, fatigue, memory and concentration problems, and difficulty in sleeping. The disorder is also known as fibromyalgia syndrome. In simple terms, fibromyalgia means pain in the muscles.

There are several approaches that try to explain fibromyalgia, and they include:

The Western Medicine Approach advocates for the need for treating the disorder rather than using pills. Such strategies are meant to boost and improve sleep, and restore muscle symmetry through exercises.

Energy-Based Approach

Some medical experts attribute fibromyalgia to a disturbance in the nervous system that leads to blockage of energy. The disturbances are caused by increased sensitivity to chemicals. Depression and anxiety have also been seen to play a role in it.

Psychological Approach

The Psychological Approach identifies depression as the main of the cause of the disorder. This is so because it increases the patient’s experience of pain. Thus, cognitive behavioral therapy is a suitable remedy for depression.

Nutrition-Based Approach

This approach emphasizes on nutrition and supplements to help those affected to boost their immunity and hormonal balance.

Symptoms of fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is often accompanied by several signs. They include:

  • Pain. Those affected by this disorder experience pain in the muscles, ligaments, tendons, hips, elbows, knees and joints
  • Fatigue. Those affected mainly complain of drained physical and mental energy
  • Memory problems. There is difficulty in concentration and the ability to remember some past events to those who have the disorder
  • Sleeping disturbances. Patients cannot sleep as they are constantly interrupted by bursts of brain activity leading to exhaustion

Causes of Fibromyalgia

There are several theories regarding the causes of Fibromyalgia. These include:

  • Genetics. Fibromyalgia is also attributed to the inheritance of mutated genes from parents who had the disorder because the condition has been known to run in many families
  • Infection. Some diseases seem to trigger or aggravate fibromyalgia
  • Physical or emotional trauma. Post-traumatic stress disorder has been associated with fibromyalgia

Who is Affected by Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is known to affect both genders of all ages. However, females are at a higher risk of contracting the condition compared to their male counterparts.

Treatment of Fibromyalgia

Despite no known treatment to counter the disorder, the following practices will go a long way in helping you live with fibromyalgia:

  • Living a healthy lifestyle by avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol, engaging in regular exercise, and practicing relaxation techniques
  • Taking part in cognitive behavioral therapy and receiving proper counseling
  • Taking painkillers such as analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) that reduce inflammation at the joints

Fibromyalgia is a painful condition with no known cure. It is advisable, thus, to live a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, practicing relaxation techniques, doing regular exercises, and taking anti-inflammatory medications to reduce the inflammation and pain.
