Different Ways You Can Prevent Dry Eyes

Dry eyes are a common affliction, and they happen regularly to many people. Dry eyes aren’t a major health concern for most sufferers, but that doesn’t change the fact they’re uncomfortable and irritating. Most people suffer from dry eyes because they expose themselves to specific symptoms. Others do suffer from other health issues that make it much more difficult to cure dry others. Others just want to know what they can to do prevent dry eyes from bothering them so much. The answer is simple, and it has everything to do with learning to prevent dry eyes.

Wear Sunglasses

When the sun is bright or the wind is whipping, it’s time to put on a pair of sunglasses. These help keep the wind out of the eyes, and they help keep the sun out of eyes. When eyes are afflicted by the wind or sun, they dry out faster and more easily than they do when you spend time indoors. Sunglasses are something you might consider keeping in your handbag or car all the time just in case you find a need for them on a windy or sunny day.

Rest Your Eyes

There are certain things that cause excess strain on your eyes, and your eyes need a break. Wearing your contact lenses too long makes your eyes hurt and dry out sometimes. You can take them out and wear your glasses overnight to keep your eyes from straining or feeling too dry, and you can put your lenses back in the following morning.

If you work at a computer screen all day, you should be sure to get up and walk around for a few minutes every hour to allow your eyes time to regain focus and produce more tears. People who stare at screens all day tend to blink less, and people who blink less produce fewer tears. Going screen-free for a few minutes every hour is a good way to keep your eyes feeling good and producing enough moisture.

Even watching television too long can cause your eyes to dry out too much. This happens when people do a movie marathon, spend sick days at home in bed, or just get on a binge-watching kick when they have a day off.

Avoid Smoke

If you’re smoking cigarettes, you should stop for several reasons. They’re unhealthy, they’re going to kill you, and they have a significant negative effect on those around you. If you’re not smoking yourself, stay away from those who do. Don’t go to bars or clubs where smoke is prevalent, and stay away from friends and family who smoke.

If you have dry eyes around a fire, it’s time to walk away. This can be a bit of a bummer during bonfires during fall when s’mores are being made and memories are being made along with. Smoke can irritate eyes and cause them to dry out and become painful, so avoid smoke when you can.

Use Eye Drops

Cold winter air or other dry air can cause many people to produce fewer tears and blink less often. This encourages their eyes to dry out, but there’s very little people can do about the weather. This is when you want to carry eye drops with you to help keep moisture in your eyes. It can be used several times a day, but it’s not for anyone to use more than every few hours.

Dry eyes aren’t a problem if you know what might trigger dryness and you work to prevent that. Dry eyes might still occur when you’re in specific conditions, but knowing it’s more likely puts you on alert and prepares you to produce your own moisture.
